From 1978-2018 the Sioux Spiritual Center served under the leadership of the Jesuit Fathers as a sacred place for Native American Catholics to encounter Jesus Christ and be formed as holy, healthy disciples and leaders of an inculturated Church. This mission continues today under the ministry of the Diocese of Rapid City, and has been broadened to offer support for the spiritual needs of Catholics in Western South Dakota and beyond, through spiritual formation opportunities, retreats, and spiritual direction.
Located in a lovely nook in the Cheyenne River Breaks south of Plainview, this beautiful log-cabin style retreat center has 15 bedrooms, 29 beds, 6 bathrooms, and a large kitchen and dining room. We have a cooking staff and can provide meals for at least 29 people at a time. Woniya Wakan Oti, the log chapel built in 2002 (in English, “House of the Holy Spirit”), sits alongside a small pioneer church, St Patricks, built in 1918. The center boasts a very nice (small) theological library for days of study. And of course, there are nearly 30 acres of nature to explore for contemplative walks and prayer.

The Lakota name for the Sioux Spiritual Center is literally "Between Heaven and Earth". This is an apt name for the Sioux Spiritual Center. Centrally located in the heart of the prairie in the Catholic Diocese of Rapid City, it is an easy place to encounter Jesus Christ, both in nature and in sacrament.
The mission of the Sioux Spiritual Center is primarily to provide a sacred place of spiritual retreat for Native and non-Native Catholics to encounter the healing love of Jesus Christ, to grow in personal relationship with him through the ministry of the Church and to mature as his disciples. Other groups may be allowed to use the SSC provided their purpose is in harmony with our mission.
Bishop Muhich has asked the board of directors to raise a $1.5M endowment to help keep the SSC in operation. If your life has been blessed by the ministry of the SSC, please consider making it part of your lasting legacy with a planned or deferred gift. For more information, Click Here.
